SEE YOU!:

PEGGY'S MESSAGE

Greetings!

Last year Northern Minnesota was shoveling out from 2 feet of snow, and we were enjoying spring weather. This year it almost seems like a rerun! Most of us have returned from the warmer states, Arizona, Florida, and California. Even those states didn’t escape cold weather this winter. It snowed in Arizona in February, especially at the higher elevations. Hot Springs shut down when they thought the ice storm was coming. We saw a flock of robins this week, There are a pair of Mallards that stop in our back yard every year, a sure sign that spring must be just around the corner and the weatherman is predicting 60 degrees and sunny on Easter weekend.

Our March meeting was a joint meeting with Minneapolis and St. Paul at Becketwood. We had a wonderful turnout from both Minneapolis and St. Paul. Thanks so much to Dorothy for undertaking this project on such short notice! Everyone appreciated the location and hospitality.

Our speaker was Anne Kerr, author of Fujiyama Trays and Oshibori Towels. She started out with Oshibori Towels. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Oshibori Towels (including me), a typical oshibori, made of cloth, is dampened with hot water, sprayed with a light scent and then offered to the customer to wipe their hands with before or during the meal. The oshibori is often rolled or folded and given to the customer on some kind of tray. Sometimes these warm towels are presented at Japanese restaurants and I really enjoy using them. We had all finished dinner so it was a welcome treat to a start of a fun presentation. Thanks so much to Anne for sharing her stories with us. If anyone did not purchase a book, and is interested in buying one, let me know and I will contact Anne.

Our April meeting will be a play at Park Square Theater on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. We will have dinner at Great Waters Brewing Co., which is located in the same building as the theater. The menu offers a selection of appetizers, soups and salads, several pasta selections, Entrees which include steak, meatloaf, ribs and fish and chips. There is also a selection of burgers, chicken sandwiches and a few unusual choices such as a wild rice burger. Selections range from $7.95 for sandwiches to $11.95 to $24.95 for entrée choices. Dinner will be at your own cost and the tickets for the performance will be $10, with proceeds going towards service.

The performance is “I Have Before Me a Remarkable Document Given to Me by a Young Lady from Rwanda” . It is a story of human bravery in the face of adversity. Juliette is a survivor of the genocide in Rwanda trying to start a life in London. We will be meeting at 5:30 p.m. for dinner and then walking through the building hallway to the play, which starts at 7:30. Romelle has reserved 15 tickets which we will pick up that night. We hope that you will think about inviting friends to join us in this event.

This week Rwanda marks the start of the 15th anniversary of a genocide in which an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and Hutu moderates were killed, mainly by ethnic Hutus.

The current president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, will lead the principal commemorative event in their capital, Kigali, close to the spot where thousands of men, women and children were slaughtered by extremist Hutus following the withdrawal of United Nations peacekeepers.

Our May meeting will be May 26th, at a location to be determined. It will be a wrap up of the year’s events and introduction to 2009-10 upcoming events.

Northwest Youth and Family Services

Northwest Youth and Family Services will be having their 6th annual Leadership Luncheon at Midland Hills Country Club on Wednesday, May 6th. Minnesota Visiting Nurses Association

MVNA will be having their annual Fundraising breakfast on June 2nd at Nicollet Island Pavilion. Anyone who is interested in attending, please contact MVNA at 612-617-4655. We received a very gracious thank you letter from Club 100 and MVNA for the twelve jars of “Zonta Country Soup Mix” which we assembled at our January meeting. They were so appreciative to be able to provide the soup to their clients who would be able to have several hearty, healthy meals. MVNA is also having their Annual April Shower on April 23rd from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Golden Valley.
A light dinner will be served and a program will be given about the work that MVNA does. Admission is a “shower
gift” such as diapers, sleepers, baby stuff and for adults – bath and kitchen towels and kitchen utensils.
If you have an interest in attending, the due date is 4/17 and contact Michelle at MVNA at 612-617-4658.

Upcoming Service Projects:

Judy and I met to brainstorm for some ideas for projects for this upcoming year. Possible projects on our list include preparing dinner for the Jeremiah Program residents, school bags, toiletry bags (include shampoo, toothpaste, soap), fleece blankets, soup mix project, birthday box, and holiday bags.

We currently have enough fleece fabric to make about 8 – 10 children’s blankets and will set up a date for that event.

Zonta International Foundation Contributions:

Each year we have contributed to various Zonta International Program Funds. The choices are:

  • Amelia Earhart Fellowship Fund
  • Women in Business Scholarship Fund (Jane Klausman)
  • Young Women in Public Affairs Fund
  • International Service Fund

In 2008-2010 the International Service Fund is providing support to three projects. Our contribution to the International Service Fund will help prevent the transmission of mother-to-child HIV in Rwanda, make dangerous cities safer for women and girls in Guatemala and El Salvador, and improve the lives of women in Liberia by reducing obstetric fistula.

  • ZISVAW Fund

Operating Funds include the Rose Fund and WHPPI (World Headquarters Property Preservation and Improvement Fund)

We will need to make a decision as to how much and which funds to support this year in addition to our local projects.

We currently have $2,332 of funds available in service which includes the $1,295 of current year net income. Last year we donated $700 to Zonta International as follows: $200 ZISVAW; $200 International Fund; $100 Amelia Earhart; and $200 Young Women in Public Affairs. We also donated cash of $900 to NYFS and MVNA. We donated $100 for a scholarship and $450 for service projects expenses.

This year we have donated $25 for the South Africa project, and purchased items for service projects for MVNA and Jeremiah project of $772. Zonta International recommends 30% of service income be allocated to Zonta International Projects, which would be slightly over $600 for 2009.

2009-10 Calendar of Events Planning:

Judy and I also jotted notes on programs ideas for this next year. Meeting in member homes seems to have worked well for us and also served as a service funding vehicle for some of our monthly events. Tentative plans are to have a service project in June, August, November, December, January and possibly March (focus on Food Shelf Month). President’s dinner in August. Possible program speakers would include a speaker focused on violence against women, looking into the Macalester Lecture Series or St. Paul Public Library events, Visit Second Harvest (in St. Paul), speaker on China and its labor practices as they relate to human rights to name a few.

In filling out the Annual Reports for Zonta, there were a few areas which we thought we might be able to work into our monthly events. These include sending out scholarship information for the Young Women in Public Affairs and Jane Klausman Scholarships. If we do not having funding through our chapter, we could still forward a qualified applicant to the next level.

We could honor an outstanding woman in our community at a dinner meeting. In addition to studying a country belonging to the UN, we could highlight monthly events at the UN in our newsletter and at meetings. We could highlight these UN days at a meeting or in the newsletter:

• Rose Day – March 8
• International Day of Peace – September 21
• UN Day – October 24
• Zonta International “Birthday” – November 8 World Aids Day – December 1
• Universal Declaration of Human Rights – December 10
These are ideas - Just food for thought!

United Nations Monthly Report

I thought we would start out with “History of the United Nations”. This information is from History of the United Nations Page

The name "United Nations", coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was first used in the "Declaration by United Nations" of 1 January 1942, during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their governments to continue fighting together against the Axis Powers.

States first established international organizations to cooperate on specific matters. The International Telecommunication Union was founded in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union, and the Universal Postal Union was established in 1874. Both are now United Nations specialized agencies.

In 1899, the first International Peace Conference was held in The Hague to elaborate instruments for settling crises peacefully, preventing wars and codifying rules of warfare. It adopted the Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes and established the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which began work in 1902.

The forerunner of the United Nations was the League of Nations, an organization conceived in similar circumstances during the First World War, and established in 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles "to promote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security."

The International Labour Organization was also created under the Treaty of Versailles as an affiliated agency of the League. The League of Nations ceased its activities after failing to prevent the Second World War.

In 1945, representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. Those delegates deliberated on the basis of proposals worked out by the representatives of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States at Dumbarton Oaks, United States, in August-October 1944. The Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 by the representatives of the 50 countries. Poland, which was not represented at the Conference, signed it later and became one of the original 51 member states.

The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945, when the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and a majority of other signatories. United Nations Day is celebrated on 24 October each year.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION – Members will receive a detailed financial report

The April 10 2009 year to date financial report is enclosed. We will have two more events to be recorded before year end and our service grant expenditures. The 2009 budget is also attached. As you know, Zonta International has increased the dues by $15 this year. Our expenses are relatively low, and we may be able to absorb the added $15 per member for this year. We will need to make a decision on this at our April meeting. For Members receiving this letter by email, if you would like a printed copy of the financial information please contact me.

St. Paul BPW
