SEE YOU!:

PEGGY'S MESSAGE

Greetings!

Did you know that there was a film entitled “2010” which was a sequel to “2001: A Space Odyssey” filmed in 1984? The film exposes a growing friction between the US and the Soviet Union, with both nations preparing missions to find out what happened to the 2001 mission to Jupiter. After lots of nuclear fusions, explosions, hot plasma waves, swarm of Monoliths and a transformation of icy wasteland to humid jungle covered with plant life, the movie morphs into a miraculous occurrence of inspiration which leads the American and Soviet leaders to end their stance of war.

The movie’s cast included Roy Scheider, John Lithgow, Helen Mirren and Candice Bergen.

In all reality, it is highly unlikely that we will send a spacecraft to Jupiter on a mission in 2010, but the friction between the US and the Soviet Union (as it was) began to dissolve with the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1990.

December 2009 Meeting: Thanks to Dorothy for hosting another lovely Christmas dinner get-together at Becketwood. The chicken dinner with the Marsala sauce was very delicious after which we enjoyed a social time at Dorothy’s following the dinner. We gorged ourselves on an array of decadent cookies, coffee and tea.

We enjoyed meeting Harriet and seeing Margaret once again and hope they will join us again.

MEMBER UPDATE:

Shirley is back at Cerenity Care Center, after another trip to St. Joe’s. She is doing better and is working diligently with the PT crew so that she can return home soon. She is in Room 430. The best time to visit would be later afternoon (4 p.m.) or after dinner (6:30 or so). Call Peggy for her phone number.

Evelyn got home just in time for the Christmas blizzard! One of their daughters came over on Christmas day and they enjoyed a nice dinner. She is getting around much better and has PT several times a week at home. She hopes to be able to come to our January meeting at Janet’s.

Pandemic Preparedness – What you can do!

The following information was in the MVNA Pulse newsletter, Winter 2009.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) both have developed basic guidelines for individuals and families.

  • Stay Healthy. Take care of yourself. Eat healthy foods. Exercise and get enough sleep.
  • Get vaccinated for the seasonal flu, and if available and you fit the CDC guidelines, get the H1N1 vaccination.
  • When coughing or sneezing, cough into your elbow or use a tissue and cover your mouth
  • Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer.
  • If you do get sick, stay home from work or school to limit spreading the virus.
The more we prepare for the H1N1 pandemic, the more we can lessen its impact.

MVNA Fundraising Breakfast Event

MVNA Fundraising Breakfast Event “There’s No Place Like Home” will be held Tuesday, June 8, 2010 starting at 7 a.m. at the Nicollet Island Pavilion. This is a very nice event which provides information, a little entertainment and a wonderful breakfast. Romelle and I have attended the past several years. Anyone interested in attending should contact MVNA at 612-617-4667.

2010 CENSUS

The Census Bureau will be taking the census. Census facts: The U.S. Census counts every resident in the US and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years.

The census is counted by first delivering a short 10 question form to every household in America and which requires that the recipient fill out the form to account for every person living at that address as of April 1, 2010. A prepaid envelope is provided to return the census form. A census worker follows up in person for every address which did not return the question form. The Census count affects the number of seats a state occupies in the U.S. House of Representatives. Minnesota is one of the states which is on the cusp of losing a congressional seat.

SERVICE PROJECT UPDATE:

We reminisced about Helen Acker’s famous Baked Pork Chops and Phyllis was thoughtful to send me a copy to put in the newsletter – It was scrumptious!

  • 4 lean pork chops 1 inch thick or more
  • ¼cup brown sugar

District events and deadlines:

YWPA Club Candidates due to District by 4/01;
Jane Klausman Candidates due to District by 7/01

Holiday Poinsettia Sale:

The poinsettia sales numbers aren’t finalized and more information on that will be in the March newsletter.

Dates to Remember:

As we close out 2009, we can look forward to these events in 2010:

Zonta International Convention to be held in San Antonio, Texas the last part of June.

The Winter Olympics will be held February 12-28th in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl.

Martin Luther King Day.

Festival of Sleep Day – Always on January 3rd. The day represents a day when snoozers can sleep in, doze, nap and catch 40 winks. January 3rd is the perfect day to celebrate the Festival of Sleep – the holidays are over, and boy are we tired! It is cold and snowy…. Certainly no better reason than to snuggle under the electric blanket and hibernate. It is ok to sleep along or with someone else, but group sleeps are not recommended.

Dress appropriately – you’ll get better sleep if you dress comfortably. Be sure to select a setting that is conducive to sleep. Discos and fitness centers are out. However, if you manage to get a great day of sleep on this unofficial holiday, a visit to a disco or fitness center is the perfect conclusion to a wonderful day. Also, as a caution, sleeping at work is not recommended, for obvious reasons, unless you are a mattress tester.

Lastly, but not least – New Year’s Eve – This year, December 31st is going to be a “once in a blue moon” occasion. A blue moon is the second full moon in a single month. A full moon occurred on December 2nd and will appear again New Year’s Eve. The last New Year’s Eve blue moon, was in 1990 and the next on will occur in 2028, which equates to once every 19 years.

National, State and local Elections – Governor, Senators, U.S. House of Representatives, etc. etc.

The 2010 St. Paul Winter Carnival – January 21 to 31st which includes Ice Carving in Rice Park – always subject to nasty cold weather…, Snow Sculpture Contest – also dependent upon cold and snow, Klondike Kate Cabaret at the Hilton Garden at 411 North Minnesota Street, Jazz Night featuring Jon Weber on Friday, January 22nd at the Artists' Quarter 408 St. Peter St. St. Paul, MN 651.292.1359 and a host of repeat annual events. If the weather stays consistent with this past week, there should be an abundance of snow and cold for the event.

This year they have added several new events – Moon Glow Pedestrian Parade in which neighbors, businesses and consulates wander up John Ireland Boulevard from the James J. Hill House to the State Capital with luminaries where they will be greeted with tethered hot air balloons, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Hot Air Balloon lift offs on Saturday January 23rd, a Rugby and LaCrosse Exhibition, The Saint Paul Winter Carnival Beer Dabbler – 40 different beers to sample for those who are of legal drinking age with purchased ticket. Nothing like enjoying a cold beer on a sub-zero night!

And, not to leave out the kiddies, there will be a Kids Day and Parade in Rice Park and the Landmark Center – kids can decorate their sleds and then join in the parade around the park.

There will be a talent competition, a lecture on winter carnival ice palaces, a kit association Frosty Fingers Fly at Lake Phalen, and Ice Fishing Contest on White Bear Lake, Fireworks right after the overthrow, a Juried art show at the Black Dog Café, broomball challenges and a memorial blood drive.

Sounds like the 2010 Winter Carnival will be bigger and better than ever with something for kids of all ages.

Some of the lesser known activities that we can enjoy in the bitterly cold, subzero January days include an “Ultimate Winter Survival” class to be held at Warner Nature Center, Marine on St. Croix for children ages 9 to 12. They can make bannock bread, snowshoe and build a giant quinzhee snow shelter.

At Wargo Nature Center, Lino Lakes, there will be a Winter Bird Balk for ages 10 and up on January 9th from 9-11 a.m. Cost is $4. Also, on January 14th, February 11th and March 11th, Wargo Nature Center will have a family astronomy series for ages 7 and up (with adult) where kids can learn to use telescopes and have hands-on activities. $4 adult and $2 youth.

On January 10th from 12:30 to 3 p.m. the Washington County Historic Courthouse, 101 West Pine, Stillwater will host a Victorian Tea and program, cost is $30.

The third annual Bear’ly open golf tournament will be held on Saturday, January 23rd with tee times at noon and 2 p.m. at Ramsey Beach in White Bear Lake. Cost $30 adults, $15 students.

And, finally, if you just can’t get enough of the snow and ice and cold, don’t forget the White Bear Lake Polar Bear Plunge, Saturday, January 30th at Ramsey Beach, 5050 Lake Avenue North in White Bear Lake. The annual plunge is a fundraising event which benefits the Special Olympics.

Landmark Center:

The Landmark Center offers free public tours on Thursdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 12 p.m. The tours focus on the building’s history, architecture, restoration, preservation and famous and infamous personages. It is located at 75 West 5th Street in downtown St. Paul.

January and February Meetings:

Since we did not get all the blankets made at the November meeting we can finish them at our January meeting. The January meeting will be at Janet’s in Bloomington. We can coordinate transportation closer to the meeting date to be determined.

We are having a joint meeting with Minneapolis in February. at Aaegesen Clinic in St. Louis Park.

St. Paul Zontians:

Also, let us remember our own chapter members who are struggling with health issues for themselves and their families, for those who are dealing with family crisis, for those who might be traveling this winter season for a safe journey, and for those who are dealing with the loss of a loved one, either physically, emotionally, or spiritually. As Zontians, we need to lift up our fellow Zonta sisters as well as others.

AS ALWAYS

If you have anything that you would like included in the newsletter, please let Peggy know. I know we would all be glad to hear what is going on with you!
