President's message:

Greetings!

Since our last meeting in May, your Board met and approved the committee chairs for this year. We need Public Relations/Communications chair. Later in the year we should also update our club by-laws, adding the changes from Zonta International. We have also completed the calendar for all meeting dates and locations except the Spring Area Meeting - TBA. I hope you will mark your calendars for the first weekend in October and join me at our District Seminar in Brainerd.

Thank you, Judy, for offering your home on July 27th. This will be a casual dinner gathering to kick-off our Global Event. Prospective members are especially welcome. Marj has invited our 2003 and 2004 Jane Klausman recipients. Judy will also be presenting our $500 service gift to Jill Lindahl for her project for expectant Romanian Women. Please let Dorothy know you will be coming with your favorite dish in hand!

New York City - filled with 2,800+ Zontians and guests - was absolutely wonderful! It hardly sleeps, nor did we. Thank you for electing me your delegate to this 57th International Convention. I will give a brief overview both on the 27th and in the August Zonta Paul.

I attended the Open House and Board Meeting of the Minnesota Visiting Nurse Agency. They have a new spacious center that they were proudly showing. Each of their Board members gave their background and professional relationship with MVNA. They are a very impressive group.

Hugs and prayers to Kathy. You are in our thoughts.

Summer has ARRIVED! ENJOY!

Membership and Upcoming Events

July 27, 2004 -                It's our 6th Annual Global Kickoff at Judy's. We will be planning our 6th annual Global event, which will once again be at the Great American History Theatre in St. Paul on Friday evening November 12, 2004. This year's performance will feature the Sisters of Swing on tour with a Holiday theme. Last year our event was sold out! Kane's Catering will once again be providing the food. The Global Event planning committee met June 29th at Lois's home to start work on some of the details. We will be getting an update and are planning on having our event brochures available so that we can start selling tickets. We will be presenting our service project "Bonding with Baby Before Birth" with their award at the July meeting. Jillayn Lindahl will be at the meeting.

Return of the President's Dinner.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 24th! Location: Shirley's home. Our global event centers around the Sisters of Swing on USO tours in Hawaii and Europe and we plan on carrying this theme through with our President's dinner. This will be an event for members and guests. More details to follow.

Happy Birthday!

Lou found this info and we thought it might be good to pass it on. It has to do with Credit card and Banking common sense.

    1. The next time you order checks have only your initials (instead of first name) and last name put on them. If someone takes your checkbook, they will not know if you sign your checks with just your initials or your first name, but your bank will know how you sign your checks.

    2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of that the check processing channels won't have access to it.

    3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks.

    4. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. Carry a photocopy of your passport when you travel here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a name, address, Social Security number, credit cards.

But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know:

    1. Cancel your credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.

    2. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc. were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one). But here's what is perhaps most important of all:

    3. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your wallet, etc. if it has been stolen:

    1.) Equifax: 1-800-525-6285

    2.) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742

    3.) Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289

4.) Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271
